Our bantam rooster, Sir elton

Chick Season

The days are getting longer, and the weather is getting warmer (somewhat)! This means that chick season is quickly descending upon us! Regardless of what Punxsutawney Phil says, we can tell spring is coming by the quiet hum of incubators taking over the house.

Before inquiring about chicks, we ask that you do a hefty amount of research, as they are a lot of work. Our chicks are non-refundable, as we don't know what condition they are in once they leave our farm. We do our best to correctly sex the chicks, but there is always a possibility that chicks aren't presenting the physical or emotional behaviors that correspond with their sex. If you go to our products tab, you will be able to see the prices. We are hatching our first batch of silkie eggs this year, so once they grow, we will have silkie eggs available to you as well.

What does a 'Straight run' mean?

A straight run of chicks means that we don't try to sex the chickens before they are sent home. This means that if you buy 10 straight-run chicks, 9 may be hens, and 1 may be a rooster. Similarly, 9 could be roosters and 1 could be a hen. Straight runs are usually for folks who are going to be butchering, as sex doesn't matter. Straight runs will always be cheaper than sexed chicks because it's taking out the labor of trying to correctly sex them.

What is a pullet/cockerel?

A pullet simply means that it is a female chicken, while a cockerel means it is a male. You may also see female chicks called hen chicks or pullet chicks while laying pullets means that they are already laying eggs, so they are 6+ months old.

What breed is best for me?

That's up to you to decide! We offer different breeds, and many are universally loved for different reasons. Orpingtons are dual-purpose, meaning they can be raised for meat or eggs. Our Ameraucanas are dual-purpose, but they are mostly known for their eggs, as they lay a variety of different colored eggs. We are offering barnyard mixes this year, which just means it is a mutt! Our barnyard mixes are usually leghorn, barred rock, or red comet hens mixed with our Ameraucana rooster. Don't rule them out! They can be incredible birds!

Egg Update

We genuinely care for and love our chickens. Because of this, we do not keep lights in their coops to stimulate egg overproduction. We allow them to molt and take their biologically appropriate break from laying. We are currently NOT SELLING EGGS until spring!
